Your Favorite Quotes In Recovery?

We all have hard days, some harder than others. During these ups and downs, sometimes a simple saying or quote that we may have heard in a meeting is all we need to pick us up and help us move on with our day. We reached out through Facebook and asked you to share some of the quotes you find yourself repeating during hard times. By sharing these, someone may hear the exact message they needed to get them through. After all, what is better than one addict helping another? Here are some of the comments we got back:

“Nothing bad can happen that a drink will make better”
“No storm last forever”
“Just for today, I will try to live through this day only, and not tackle all my problems at once”
“The only way around it, is through it”
“This too shall pass”
“And acceptance is the answer to all my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing, or situation – some fact of my life – unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God’s world by mistake. Until I could accept my alcoholism, I could not stay sober; unless I accept life completely on life’s terms, I cannot be happy. I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to be changed in the world as on what needs to be changed in me and in my attitudes.”
“Feelings are valid, but they are not factual”
“Dear Lord, thank you for all you have given me, for all you have taken from me, and for all you have left me with”
“Let go, and let God”
“Once you know, you can’t go back to not knowing”
“Eliminate self-defeating thoughts”
“Just do the next right thing, and if you don’t know what that is, just don’t use no matter what”
“Serenity Prayer, God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”

Thanks to everyone who shared encouragement. What are some other sayings that help you through tough times?

We are All Connected Through Deaths From Addiction

Written by Eliza Player on Monday, 14 May 2012.

Addiction and Recovery

The idea for this piece first began brewing, when a friend posted a picture of a friend she lost in response to a post I put up about the loss of one of my own friends. She pointed out, we are all connected through these deaths. And then, I stumbled across this news story, the tragic death of a relatively unknown musician. I thought, once more, of how we are all connected in these deaths. Then I uncovered the story of the dead man's bandmate, and I realized that we are all also connected in recovery.
