    Alabama Criminally Prosecutes Addicted Mothers

Alabama's chemical endangerment law was originally intended to protect children from meth labs. The law prohibits any "responsible person" from "exposing a child to an environment in which he or she knowingly, recklessly, and intentionally causes or permits a child to be exposed to, ingest or inhale, or have contact with a controlled substance, chemical substance, or paraphernalia." After the law was passed, law enforcement extended the law to also protect unborn children in the womb. In Alabama, mothers who test positive for drugs are often immediately thrown in jail. /p>
