What is Oxycontin?

Oxycontin is an incredibly powerful narcotic used to relieve pain. It is classified as an opoid agonist with effects similar to those of morphine. Oxycontin is otherwise known as Oxycodone in the clinical medicine community. Familiar street names are: berries, blues, roxies, and 30’s. Most commonly, Oxcontin is prescribed to relieve the effects of acute, chronic and severe pain that last for long durations of time. It generally is ingested, but abusers often inject it, inhale it or take it rectally. Oxycontin also has powerful mood altering properties. Therefore, it is often abused and used illicitly. Oxycontin use often leads to the feeling of euphoria, mitigates anxiety and provides a sense of well- being. As with most medications, there are side effects. Some commonly reported side effects are: headache, lightheadedness, memory loss, diarrhea, impotence and even overdose. Oxycontin is often referred to as the gateway drug to Heroin, as Heroin is often far less expensive, much more easy to obtain and provides similar effects. Severe withdrawal symptoms are common, some include muscle pain, insomnia, flu like symptoms, nausea, and anxiety. Due to its addictive properties, Oxcontin often starts out with a valid doctor’s prescription. Yet, it commonly ends with the user “doctor shopping” to obtain the substance for illicit use. Stolen prescriptions as well as internet purchases are also common.
