A traffic stop in Auburn led to the discovery of a large supply of heroin after police stopped a minivan Tuesday night for tailgating another vehicle on Route 290.

When the trooper approached the van, he noticed air freshener cans scattered all around the car. Wilfredy Rodriguez, 32, and 22 year old Kenneth Roque were questioned, and the officer became suspicious when their explanations didn’t add up.

A K-9 unit was then called in to search the vehicle, and discovered a strange package inside. Underneath multiple layers of cellophane, mustard, ketchup, and coffee grounds was close to 750 grams of heroin.

The two men were arrested and are now facing charges for trafficking heroin.

Police believe the men were not strangers to the drug trade. One of the suspects listed his address as being from Puerto Rico.

There are several other drug trails that lead from western Massachusetts to Boston, and police are now following these routes.
