Recent arrest of Jakarta pilot has lead points the finger at drug use. In the last 7 months, 4 employees at the largest private airline in Indonesia, Lion Air, have been arrested on suspicion of possessing crystal meth. According to an article in NY Times, the demand of Indonesia’s rising middle class has pushed airlines to add more routes, and some believe that the industry is short-staffed.
The head of the narcotics operation task force says that drug use is common in a pilot’s lifestyle. Indonesian pilots are required to submit to drug and alcohol screening to get their licenses, but after that screening is completely voluntary.
