Post Gastric Bypass Patients at Risk for Addiction Transference

on Wednesday, 04 April 2012. Posted in From Professionals

There has been a sharp rise of post-bariatric surgery patients entering treatment for severe issues with drug addiction.  Inspire Malibu’s drug addiction treatment authority released a cautionary tale, warning the public about addiction transference.

We often hear about a drug addict that quits drugs, replacing the addiction with alcohol, and we hear the argument that methadone simply replaces heroin, trading one addiction for another.  The idea of addiction transference is no novel idea in the addiction community, but many of these patients who have bariatric surgery are taken by surprise when they trade their addiction to food for an addiction to drugs and alcohol.

Do you know anyone who has simply traded one addiction for another?
