Mixed martial arts superstar and UFC champ Jon Jones is asking for more time to complete an alcohol abuse program.
Jones, 24, was originally ordered to counseling when he pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated on May 26.
Jones was driving his 2012 Bentley in the late night/early morning hours on May 19 when he crashed into a utility pole. Although he was uninjured, the two female passengers in the car were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.
Following the incident, Jones’ license was suspended, and he was ordered to equip his car with an interlock device, which measures blood alcohol levels before the car will start. Jones was also ordered to pay for damages caused by the accident, complete a substance dependency evaluation, and attend victim impact classes.
Jones has been participating in the alcohol abuse classes near his home in Ithaca. He appeared in front of a Binghamton City Court judge today to ask for more time to complete his drug and alcohol abuse program.
Although the champ has no problem handling opponents in the ring, this enemy may be harder to defeat.
Jones is currently 10-1 in the UFC (16-1 MMA) and is the reigning UFC light-heavyweight champ. Jones’ sentencing has been delayed until July 31.
