The largest inpatient addiction treatment center in central Texas, Austin Recovery, is going smoke free April 20.
According to an article at statesman.com, 80% of the patients at this treatment facility are smokers. One of the centers senior counselors claims that if you quit smoking when you enter treatment, you will be 25% more likely to succeed in quitting.
Austin Recovery received a grant from Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department to create a smoke free campus, with smoking cessation tools. Many treatment centers are hesitant to forbid smoking, fearing that people will not enter treatment if they cannot smoke. Austin hopes that its enrollment will not drop significantly, and the center will be seen as innovative.
