Shia LaBeouf Opens Up About Rehab and the Price of Fame

on Tuesday, 09 June 2015. Posted in Breaking News

At a Tribeca Film Festival screening of a new movie that he produced, Shia LaBeouf spoke openly about his recent stint in rehab. The actor received treatment for alcohol addiction last year after being arrested for public drunkenness and disorderly behavior at a Broadway show.

This event was the culmination of a number of different instances of bizarre behavior due to LaBeouf's addiction. Last year he also inexplicably walked out of a press conference, stated that he was leaving public life and wore a paper bag over his head at a film premier in Berlin.

LaBeouf's increasingly erratic behavior eventually led to his arrest which helped him to realize that his actions were symptoms of a larger problem of addiction.

Recovery from Alcohol Addiction

As LaBeouf recently began to describe his recovery, he spoke about the methods of treatment he experienced while in rehab. As a part of his recovery he was involved in a kind of operatic therapy where you sit with a small group of three or four people and act out family roles.

These small groups would have each person play the role of a family member and work through issues that have never been addressed in reality. The actor also spoke about how much his celebrity status has negatively affected him in his life.

He said that being a celebrity robs you of your individuality and separates you, making you into a kind of commodity or enslaved body. LaBeouf has always disliked being a star and even announced that he was retiring due to his disdain for life as a celebrity.

Although LaBeouf has made a few appearances since returning from rehab he has not been in the public eye as much as he once was. He prefers life as a performer rather than a star or actor but it remains unclear if he will appear in any more films.

Alcohol and Self-Destructive Actions

After LaBeouf was arrested and voluntarily entered treatment, his publicist stated that he was working to become a better person. LaBeouf had experienced many run-ins with the law prior to his most recent arrest. He was involved in a car crash in 2008 while drunk driving resulting in an injury to his hand.

He refused a chemical test at the time and his driver's license was suspended. After the incident the actor revealed his inner confusion and turmoil saying "Why am I an alcoholic? I haven't a damn clue. What is life about? I don't know." In June of last year, LaBeouf was charged with one count of criminal trespassing and two counts of disorderly conduct.

LaBeouf's mental state and behavior clearly indicated a severe alcohol addiction which was affecting his life in a number of different ways. From the actor's discussions on fame and celebrity, it seems that the stress of being a star took its toll on him psychologically and could have been a major contribution to his alcohol abuse.

Because Shia LaBeouf has condemned fame and stardom, he has more recently taken on the role of executive producer for a film called "LoveTrue" by director Alma Har'el. LaBeouf preferred to work behind the scenes instead of in front of the camera for this latest project. He provided the financial means to make the film and allowed the director to complete her own vision rather than have to take direction from him as a producer.

He wanted to be a more supportive role to avoid being too controlling over the project. LaBeouf's appearance at the screening of the film offered him a chance to return briefly to the public eye following his breakdown and recovery last year.
