The City of Santa Monica recently approved a moratorium regarding the application process for establishing medical marijuana dispensaries in the coastal town.
The moratorium is currently set to last 45 days. However, a moratorium of this kind may be extended upwards of 22 months and 15 days.
There is no doubt that individuals seeking approval to open private medical marijuana dispensaries hope that an extension will not be necessary.
The city council in Santa Monica, which unanimously approved the moratorium on October 02, 2012, put the vote on the table in an effort to somehow develop a systematic criteria for approving medical marijuana dispensary openings.
Currently, as one Santa Monica city council member stated, the lack of uniformity among Federal, State and local authorities makes the process of approving medical marijuana dispensary openings in Santa Monica complicated, to say the least.
Local municipalities, particularly Santa Monica, are concerned about the negative impact of approving medical marijuana dispensaries, specifically with respect to a prospective increase in crime, theft, vagary, and robberies as non-resident individuals travel into the city to purchase marijuana.
Currently, the city of Santa Monica has no medical marijuana dispensaries.
Nevertheless, the need for medical marijuana dispensaries is a growing concern among city residents who suffer from health ailments that could be alleviated by medical marijuana.
On one hand, the Santa Monica city council is concerned about meeting the needs of its residents.
Meanwhile, the city is also concerned about maintaining the safety and welfare of its residents.
