Russell Brand Sobriety

He was Great Britain's resident funny man who became a successful American transplant, and although now divorced, married none other than America's California-born-and-raised, equally talent and famous, pop princess, Katy Perry.

He is a movie star who has appeared in some of the biggest box office hits including Rock of Ages, with Uber-actor Tom Cruise.

If that is not huge enough, he has hosted several American Awards shows, including, Video Music Awards ("VMA") and the Music Television Award ("MTV" Awards), both of which are as American as apple pie, and the epitome of notoriety in America.

What is perhaps more surprising than his success, is the fact that he was once a rock bottom, disaster of an alcoholic and heroin addict. By the way, he is a recovering sex addict as well!

As the title of this article leads you to recognize, Russell decided to get sober 10 years ago, following bouts with depression, two bi-polar diagnoses, death obsession, cutting, bulimia, feelings of abandonment because his father left him when he was a child, and also due his mothers three bouts with cancer. Wow….what a mouthful!

The fact that he faced so much in life and still was able to overcome his battle with drug addiction and alcoholism, not to mention sex addiction, is more than laudable, it is heartwarming.

He has even spoken about his successful journey from addiction to recovery in his 2012 documentary, Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery. I read it and I loved it. There is something for everyone.

When we are busy feeling sorry for ourselves, focusing on what we have gone through, there is no room to recognize that there are other people who have had it just as bad, and did not let it hold them back.

Russell, you are a stand up guy, congratulations on ten years of sobriety.
