Many people turn to drugs or alcohol to help with an emotional problem. For some people, this solution turns into the problem, and they soon find themselves hitting rock bottom. Rock bottom is different for everyone. What becomes rock bottom for one person may seem like hardly a problem at all.

Unfortunately, some people think they have hit rock bottom, only to find that there was actually farther to fall. When you feel you have hit rock bottom, then it is time to seek a real solution for your problems.

Drugs and Alcohol are not a Solution

Drugs and alcohol interfere with the brain, especially the areas controlling your mood. This is why many people turn to alcohol or drugs when they deal with significant emotional problems or a mental health disorder such as depression or anxiety. However, they are not a real solution to your problem.

Instead, they only mask the pain until they wear off. If you never work on dealing with the actual problem, then it only gets worse. Eventually, your body will also develop a tolerance and a dependence on the drug, creating an even bigger problem.

The Problem of Addiction

When you become addicted to drugs and alcohol, you can find yourself damaging your relationships, health, and professional life. Some people can get over an addiction just through self-help services such Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous, and others just need one-on-one therapy a few times a week.

However, if you have hit rock bottom, then you most likely require more intensive therapy. Rehab offers a place for you to go and receive the intensive treatment you need to tackle your demons and overcome your addiction. It will also help you to transition back into your life once you have become sober.

This might include rebuilding relationships and learning to live a life without drugs and alcohol, especially if you are used to numbing strong emotions. During early recovery, you will have to learn to once again handle and manage emotional turmoil without turning to drugs or alcohol, which leads to many relapse occurrences without the proper support network.

You Do not have to Hit Rock Bottom

You do not have to hit rock bottom before seeking treatment and overcoming your addiction. If you know you have a problem, then you should enter treatment right away. It is a myth that an addict must hit rock bottom before being able to change.

All you need for real change is recognition of and the desire to overcome your problems. Studies have shown that the earlier an addict enters treatment, the better chance he or she has of overcoming the problem and not relapsing.
