Opiates In Cheese

When I first came across this article, I thought it was merely a propaganda piece, promoting the vegetarian lifestyle, but I dug a little deeper and found out that cheese really does contain opiates. Although I might not argue for cheese's addictive nature, and as much as I love cheese...I have never experienced cravings from not having it. Well, never a craving any different than another food craving, like for lasagna or BBQ Shrimp. But, as a recovering heroin addict, I am not surprised that cheese is, in fact, my favorite food. And you have to admit the cheese in the picture looks pretty tempting!

"My name is Jessica and I am a recovering cheese addict. This is no joke. Cow's milk actually contains traces of morphine, codeine, and other opiates, which are naturally produced in cow's livers and end up in their milk."

According to ThisDishIsVegetarian.com, cheese is an addictive item. Jessica claims it has the highest concentration of casein, which is a protein that breaks down during digestion and releases a slew of opiates. She says it has been a year since she has had any cheese, or dairy product, but she claims to still find herself in the face of temptation. Jessica had to quit cheese cold turkey, but she says if you cannot do that, it is best to cut down your intake gradually. She describes the times that cravings become too much, and she now uses vegetarian cheese substitutes.

Jessica claims that it makes it easier to overcome her cheese cravings by thinking about the suffering cows.

I have been clean for five years, and since then I have become a mother, graduated college, and started a writing career. I have a B.A. in Mass Media Communication, with a minor in Journalism. I have also written one published book, Through Both Hell and High Water: A Memoir of Addiction and Hurricane Katrina, which tells the story of those dark days I spent in New Orleans after the storm, battling with addiction amidst a natural disaster. I hope that my words can touch others out there, struggling with addiction.
