A few years back Tim McGraw caused a slight controversy when he revealed that he might temporarily retire from country music to become none other than a politician; Yes, Tim McGraw wanted to run for public office.

Fast forward to 2012 and McGraw is still singing but it’s quite a different tune; that tune is sobriety. Now that McGraw no longer drinks he has no interest in political service. In fact, forty-five year old McGraw, a Democrat and Louisiana native, revealed to the Minneapolis Star Tribune that when he made those statements he was drinking and although patriotic has never had any political aspirations. Yet, he does not rule it out; but it would be once his children are adults.

Back to alcohol, three years ago McGraw gave up alcohol for good. McGraw’s drinking and partying began to cause problems in his marriage with his equally famous wife and often his touring mate, Faith Hill. For years they had been having problems in their marriage due to his drinking and although they presented a united front they were living apart on their huge estate.

Tim eventually sought treatment for his alcohol use and has been sober since. He insists that he wanted to save his marriage and he wanted to be a good example to his three daughters.

Apparently drunk-texting played a huge part in his getting sober. Often he would call his wife, Faith, after or during partying. In fact, he would be clearly intoxicated, slurring his words, etc.

Therefore, he learned how to text, with his reasoning being that he would better be able to hide that he was intoxicated or had been drinking. However, eventually she was able recognize that he had been drinking even in his texts. So, there you have it: drunk-texting was what ended it all! All kidding aside getting sober has been a huge accomplishment for McGraw who has since shot to even greater heights in his career.

In addition to being a best-selling and award-winning artist, he has since added movie star to his resume. In fact, around the time that he starred in the Academy award-winning film, Blind Slide, he started his road of sobriety. Then he followed up with the controversial film Country Strong, which coincidently addressed alcoholism.

As mentioned above, Tim McGraw is three years sober. As well he is happily married and earlier this year embarked on a nationwide tour with none other than Kenny Chasey, his long-time friend, as well as Grace Potter & the Nocturnals and Jake Owen.
