Naomi Campbell: "I Gave Up Drinking Alcohol. Not drinking Makes Me A Lot Happier."

Naomi Campbell Sobriety

We all know her, as she is as infamous for mercurial moods as she is for her breathtaking, awe-inspiring, one of a kind beauty. Although Campbell is her last name, most people immediately think of her when they hear the two syllable name Naomi. Similar to Madonna, Cher, and Oprah, for her, it's just Naomi!

Discovered barely as a teenager in the tony Covent Garden area of London, her star immediately rocketed to meteoric proportions. Naomi was a household name by the early nineties and dubbed not only a Supermodel, but one of the elite "Trinity", coined for the three top, very best names in the fashion industry. Force-nature Naomi, still-in-demand Linda Evangelista, and the-to-this-day highly sought after Christy Turlington changed the face of the fashion industry.

She's walked every major runway, been the face of major advertising campaigns, and even graced the cover of every major publication, including American Vogue.

Researching for this article conjured up my own personal memories of reading and viewing the glossy pages of Vogue with a flash light beneath my childhood blanket, particularly when I was supposed to be asleep.

An exceptional reader for my age, even at six I was reading major adult publications that my mother subscribed to. I was held captive by her beauty even before I fully comprehended that I was a boy and could never compare. Although, there have been comparisons……with some people referring to me as the male Naomi, and Baby Naomi.

With that said, who knew that Naomi was a major, major cocaine addict and alcoholic?! For many of you, the public brawls that Naomi is well-known for may have been tipped off.

Still, there are others who could never have imagined that someone clearly as talented (she even has an album "Baby Woman"), beautiful and charming as she is could ever be an alcoholic…….cunning, baffling, powerful!

In and out of substance abuse rehabilitation centers for years, not to mention many unsuccessful respites from alcohol and cocaine, Naomi never believed she was an alcoholic.

However, after she collapsed during a photo shoot in 1999 Naomi checked herself into substance abuse rehabilitation for the last time.

I am happy to inform you that Naomi remained clean and sober and has raked up more than 13 years of sobriety. Way to go Naomi.

Even more, she is as ubiquitous as ever, particularly due to her staying power in the fashion and beauty industries, not to mention her new show on Oxygen.

Yes, as Naomi has been known as the face, she has an aptly titled new show called The Face. Well done Naomi. We cannot wait to see what you are up to next.
