Craig Ferguson is famous, here in the United States, and abroad in Scotland, as a television personality and comedian.

He is the host of the hugely successful, The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson.

What many of you may not know is that fifty year old Ferguson struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for many years before he reached success in his career.

He is a self-admitted alcoholic who mostly struggled with alcohol abuse. Alcohol is what caused him the most trouble.

Drug addiction impacted Ferguson’s life as well. Ferguson has stated that he used drugs, mostly cocaine, to increase his ability to drink more alcohol.

Meanwhile, Ferguson, at his saddest, and not too long before he entered sobriety, contemplated suicide.

In fact, in London, on Christmas day 1991, Ferguson was preparing to jump off the Tower Bridge when a friend of his offered him a drink.

These days he seems to have put the struggles of addiction behind him, not too much to refrain from openly discussing and making fun of his former battle with drugs and alcohol. He is so open and honest about his past substance abuse that we actually know his sobriety date, which is February 18, 1992.

In the meantime, even though he makes a living making fun of celebrities, he does make an exception when it comes to a celebrity’s troubles with alcoholism.

In fact, in 2007, at the height of Britney Spears' alleged struggle with substance abuse and mental health issues, the comedian and talk show host refused to make fun of or mock the singer when it came to her struggle with alcoholism.

Now that he is no longer drinking himself into oblivion, Ferguson stars in films such as Brave, My Fair Lady, and How To Train Your Dragon 2, among others.
