My name is Nick M. I am a grateful recovering alcoholic. Here are the facts: (1) I am 25; (2) I got sober when I was 19; (3) I am sober for 6 years; (4) I entered Dr. Paul’s at the Bay in Florida for 28 days and have not found it necessary to pick up a drink or a drug since then; (5) I have a home group, a sponsor, four sponsees, and a commitment at three of the seven meetings I regularly attend.
I am the person I am largely because of what I learned at Dr. Paul’s at the Bay.
When I walked through the doors of Dr. Paul’s at the Bay in Florida, I was pretty much fed up with life. For me, it was a last resort. I promised my parents I would try it, not really believing that it would work.
I had recently overdosed on heroin. In fact, I was read my last rites twice. For some reason I am here, perhaps to be of service through others; at least that is what I think, I suppose that is why I am telling you my story.
At Dr. Paul’s at the Bay, I learned to cope better, to face life without the assistance of drugs and alcohol. I developed new habits, maintained a daily schedule and addressed issues that had haunted me for years.
Every day, I attended a meeting, discussion group, individual counseling and even group counseling. Also, days were allocated for family groups, with my mom and dad.
Beyond all the hard work to get better, there was a lot of fun as well. We went to the beach, had picnics, rollerbladed, fished all the time, watched films. We had a nutritionist and worked with a personal trainer.
In the meantime, my true self began to emerge. I was a happy person beneath all the pain. I had a unique personality, with interest and hobbies.
Today, I have a career as a drug and alcohol counselor, courtesy of Dr. Paul’s at the Bay drug and alcohol certification program.
Each day get the opportunity to assist others with changing their lives for the better, just like friendly and experienced counselors at Dr. Paul’s at the Bay helped me to change my life.
