The 22 year old daughter of singers Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown has been in a medically induced coma ever since she was found unconscious at her home on January 31. The girl was discovered face down in a bathtub by boyfriend Nick Gordon and rushed to a Georgia hospital where she has remained ever since.
The troubling incident occurred almost 3 years to the day after Brown's mother, singer and pop star Whitney Houston, was discovered dead in her own home in an eerily similar fashion. Fans are wondering what events could have led the young woman to end up in such a tragic situation.
Addiction experts who have weighed in on Bobbi Kristina's case say that being raised in an unstable environment with drug addicted parents and also having a genetic disposition to addiction may have played in big role.
The tumultuous relationship between Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown has been well documented in the media. But what hasn't been as well documented is how the relationship affected their young daughter.
Bobbi Kristina's Childhood
Addiction experts agree that growing up around parents who use drugs and have a codependent relationship takes a toll on children, often leading them to abuse drugs as adults and unconsciously seek out similar abusive relationships. Growing up in the shadow of her parents' fame may have added to an already tense situation.
The relationship between Houston and Brown played out in a very public way, especially with their reality show "Being Bobby Brown" documenting their every family issue. Children who grow up with famous parents often have a difficult time forming their own identities that are separate from their parents'.
Oftentimes these children will resort to extreme or unusual behavior in an attempt to generate their own kind of fame and media attention. This is especially the case with children who are raised by celebrity parents with larger than life personas that can be competed with.
In addition to what was likely an unstable upbringing, Bobbi Kristina may have not received the right kind of support following the devastating loss of her mother in 2012. Her behavior became increasingly erratic after Houston's death, with the young woman disappearing immediately after her mother's funeral and later found doing drugs in a hotel room. It appears that Bobbi Kristina may have not been getting the emotional and psychological support that she so desperately needed at that time.
Prior to being found unconscious Bobbi Kristina had taken to social media to express her outrage over a Lifetime biopic about her mother. The tv movie cast her mother's drug use and relationship to Brown in an unflattering light.
Bobbi Kristina's outrage is understandable, but venting on social media is not the best way to deal with uncomfortable emotions. It's common for many young adults to spend hours on social media, but expressing pain, frustration, sadness, and other uncomfortable emotions on such a public platform can often end up backfiring. For the daughter of celebrities, the results can be even worse.
Investigators are now looking more closely at Bobbi Kristina's relationship with Nick Gordon, the adopted son of Houston and Brown who grew up alongside Bobbi Kristina. The 22 year old revealed her relationship with Gordon shortly after her mother's death. Sources close to the family say the relationship between the two was an unhealthy one that involved frequent altercations and even drug use.
Experts investigating the circumstances surrounding Bobbi Kristina's case say that evidence suggests Gordon may have something to do with the young woman's injury. While details regarding the case still remain under wraps, Bobbi Kristina remains unconscious in a Georgia hospital with father Bobby Brown and other family members spending every day hoping she makes it out alive.
