Alec Baldwin Had "A Moment of Clarity" 30 Years Ago

Alec Baldwin Sobriety

He hails from a working class Irish Catholic family that prided themselves on there high ethics and stellar morals. His brother and fellow actor is Stephen Baldwin.

After completing university, he entered the celebrity arena, and immediately garnered attention for his broad range of acting skills….drama, comedy, improv…you name it and he could do it.

His name is Alec Baldwin, and boy was he blessed with good looks, and from the looks of it, more than his fare share of luck, or so it seems.

Yes, he is a series regular on a hit show, 30 Rock, which has won numerous Emmy awards and has a cast that includes "a Whose Who" of Hollywood stars, including Tina Fey, Tracey Morgan (who lived in the same apartment building I lived in when I moved to LA), and Jane Krakowski, among others. Recently, after years of being single, he married a beautiful young woman who is more than two decades younger. They met in a yoga class, and she was his teacher.

As well, he recently starred in several hit films, including the tongue and cheek Rock of Ages. What you may not know is that it was not always this way!

He is well-known for his anger problems, he went through a very public divorce from Oscar winner Kim Basinger, and struggled with his weight.

That is not all, as Baldwin wrote in an essay included in Christopher Kennedy Lawford's book, Moments of Clarity, during his much of his twenties, he drank alcohol excessively, engaged in drug use, and played video games, pretty much until he was about 27 years old. He described the period as his "sixth sense phase", i.e., "when you are dead but don't know it."

In an excerpt of his essay in Moments of Clarity, Baldwin writes of his time living in Los Angeles during the 80s, “I’m driving down the road, I’m having a drink. It’s 4 o’clock……. I’m supposed to have a drink. But one day I went, I don’t see anybody else in their car with a plastic take out container filled with ice and wine. They’re drinking coffee, they’re drinking Diet Coke. They’re not drinking wine…….I would play video games from, like, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and I would wind down. Then I’d go home and go to bed…..This was the only way I could go beta and go into that state I needed to be, where I could calm down and take my mind off everything. I didn’t want to see anybody, talk to anybody, deal with anybody.”

Well, there you have it. That was Baldwin's bottom, and as mentioned above, soon after that he got the help he needed, cleaned up his act and the rest is ancient history! To say the least, 30 years later, at the age of 54, Baldwin is still clean and sober, riding high and enjoying his life.

For all of you out there considering sobriety, it is worth it, as there is sure to be a light at the end of the tunnel.
