Alcoholism is a disease that can often begin with low self-esteem. When a person feels bad about who they are they can treat themselves badly with self-destructive habits. They can also use alcohol as a way to medicate their feelings of low self-esteem and ease their distress. When alcohol is used in this way, addiction can become very difficult to escape. What is Self-Acceptance?
In life there are many things that we cannot change and refusing to accept these things can lead to suffering. Self-acceptance means embracing oneself in spite of shortcomings and loving yourself unconditionally. Everyone has good points and bad points that must be accepted and an attitude of perfectionism can lead to negative thoughts and actions. Someone who has self-acceptance has nothing to hide and has come to terms with whatever flaws they might have. It also means focusing on positive aspects of the self and building up those strengths to your benefit. Seeing the positive and accepting the negative as unchangeable can bring peace of mind to someone with an addiction. That peace of mind can be an important part of maintaining sobriety during your recovery.
How Acceptance Can Create Balance
When you have developed a sense of self-acceptance, that feeling of acceptance can translate to everything in your life. As you accept the negative with the positive you will find yourself more balanced and able to cope with whatever is going on in your life. Acceptance allows you to live in the present without getting swept away by strong emotions. As you eliminate the kind of extreme mood swings you might have had in the past you will find that there is less stress in your life and less of a need or desire to drink. Self-acceptance can make it easier to expect good things to happen and create your own positive results.
Part of acceptance is being able to distinguish between what you can change and what you cannot. Taking action to fix what you can change can help you feel empowered. Accepting the things you cannot change can end frustration and needless suffering. While you may not be able to change certain aspects of your personality or genetics, you can change your life and neutralize alcoholism by being active against it. You can accept your life as it is while still maintaining power over your situation and changing your addictive behavior. It is possible to create positive results by developing feelings of confidence and faith in yourself.
