Overcoming an addiction is not simple. Making the decision to stop drinking or using drugs is only the first step in a long process. The goal of recovery is to create a new life that is healthier and more balanced.

To do that, there is a lot of work involved. There are certain things in your life you will have to accept and work on. There are also behaviors you will need to let go of. Without being willing to make those changes, your life can never change and move forward to a better place.

But don't let that discourage you. There are tools of recovery that can help give you the support and motivation to stay on track. The following are five of the most powerful coping mechanisms to help guide you through the recovery process.

1 . Learn how to avoid high risk situations - This tool involves learning how to take care of yourself, both physically and mentally, so that feelings of tiredness, loneliness, anger, and hunger don't overwhelm you and lead to drinking or using again. Exercise, plenty of sleep, and a healthy diet can do wonders for your body.

Taking care of yourself mentally can be a bit more challenging. Joining a group or finding a sponsor can really help with feelings of loneliness. Many of those in recovery also choose to begin therapy with a someone who specializes in addiction in addition to other topics.

You will also need to take a critical look at the people in your life. Is it time to let some of them go? This may be necessary if these people put you at risk of a relapse. All these little changes contribute to building a healthier, more balanced version of yourself.

2 . Relaxation is important - stress is a big trigger, so learning how to deal with it in healthy ways is an important recovery tool. Many choose to learn meditation or practice yoga regularly to keep their stress levels in check. Whatever method you choose, be sure to practice regularly and to be always be kind to yourself.

4 . Accept help and support from others - This can also be quite hard to do, especially for someone who is used to being alone or has been let down by others. The truth is recovery can't be done alone.

You need support from a group, a sponsor, or loved ones who understand what you're going through. Take advantage of the help that is available for people who are serious about getting sober. The support you need is out there, you just have to look for it.

5 . Offer your service to others - This is another important part of recovery that can really help a person build up their sense of self worth. Service can take the form of volunteering, sponsoring another person in recovery, or simply helping out at meetings. You'll find that service is quite a satisfying experience and it helps you take your mind off your own troubles and connect with others.
