Alcoholics and Addicts: Make Happiness A Habit

Written by DeShawn McQueen on Thursday, 18 October 2012. Posted in Breaking News, Alcohol

Alcohol Addiction

As recovering alcoholics and addicts we must get in the habit of caring for ourselves, developing joy for ourselves and doing things that make us happy, on a daily basis.

If this helps, imagine that this it, this is your last day to live, so you have. Don’t you want to die happy…doing something that you enjoy?

If fact, imagine living each day “as if it were your last, a lifetime full of last days. Wouldn’t that be nice”?

To be honest, it is great to spend money if you have it. Although, there is no requirement that you spend money! Anything that puts a smile on your face and truly makes you happy will suffice.

For instance, if you love the ocean, go and spend a little time walking down the edge of the ocean. Perhaps you might bring a notepad that you can write down your feelings or emotions in. Maybe that would even be a great time to complete your daily 10th step if you do one; you can kill two birds with one stone!

Others might decide to visit with a good friend that you have not seen in a while. Why don’t you call up that friend and invite him or her for a coffee or perhaps even an impromptu dinner?!

If you are like me, you might decide to get your weekly massage a day early. Who says that you have to stick to your routine!

In fact, research shows spontaneity every once in while helps with developing long term memory, not to mention prevents cognitive decline. So, not only will you decompress for an hour, you will positively impact your health.

Or, you could treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure. I do not know about you, but I do not feel quite right without my weekly manicure and pedicure. Not only does it provide me with joy during that hour that my mani-pedi is performed, every time that I subsequently look at my well-manicured and pedicured cuticles I feel nothing less than joy and bliss.

What about sitting and listening to some of you favorite music, as you daydream about your desires and goals?! I love to do that. Without fail, I walk away happy and even inspired enough to take action toward fulfilling the desire or goal.

You could also grab a book, your kindle, or even your I-pad, for that matter, and head to your favorite café, grab a seasonal drink, like the pumpkin spice latte, and sit and read, or even people watch.

Ooh, what about grabbing your camera-phone or another camera and taking photos of the beautiful fall foliage. Perhaps you could even develop a couple, print them out and frame them. Love it!

The activity does not matter, and as you can see, it does not have to cost you more, and in the least, it can be inexpensive. The takeaway is that you learn to develop the habit of putting a smile on your face. The key is that it makes you happy.
